Lost Season 3 Episode 17 - Catch-22 Review

*SPOILERS* Be warned, the following posts contains spoilers about Lost
The Island:
This episode’s plot went way back - all the way to last season. Season 2 ended with Penny’s discovery of the island, and it seemed like it could be a major shift in the story. However, even though she appeared in another episode that plot wasn’t brought up since that season ending moment. Now, almost a year later, they finally returned to it. Another person arriving on the island, especially one who was important and could rescue them was an exciting prospect. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the end of the episode that much really happened, and even then it wasn’t what was expected.
Most of the episode was taken up by the trek across the beach and through the jungle, and Desmond chasing what he had seen. His logic seemed to be off though. In an earlier episode, he told Charlie he was going to die, and that he was trying to save him. Desmond said that he couldn’t though, and since Charlie was meant to die he would no matter what Desmond did. He was merely delaying it. If something was meant to happen, it would even if Desmond apparently changed the flow of events. So, shouldn’t the plane have arrived no matter what? Even if it didn’t happen the same as Desmond’s visions it would eventually happen anyway, just in a different manner. Either that was only the case with Charlie, or most of Desmond’s actions in this episode were pointless.
Besides Desmond once again saving Charlie, not much came of the trek across the island until the very end. Then, the moment the entire episode had been setting up to finally came. It wasn’t what Desmond (and probably most of us) expected though. While it wasn’t Penny, it looks like the woman was at least sent by her - because she knew Desmond immediately. We’ll see if she can actually do anything or will only become another person abandoned on the island.
Then there was everyone else on the beach. Jack is basically as close as he can get to Juliet, and seems to have no idea what she’s planning (then again, we don’t either - we just know it’s something bad. Jack doesn’t even know that). I could not understand how he turned down Kate though. She pretty much offered herself to him, and he completely blew her off. She is much better than Juliet - and not just because she’s hotter.
Speaking of which, even if you didn’t enjoy this episode much you had to at least like the part with her in her tent. She sure is looking good in those black underwear. If you ask me, they should definitely throw that in more often. I wonder though, does she ever change underwear? If I remember correctly, the few times we’ve seen her without clothes she’s had those exact same underwear and bra. Don’t get me wrong, they look great on her, but after a few months they must get pretty nasty.
The Flashbacks:
I really don’t have much to say about the flashbacks, as they were pretty pointless. If you especially enjoy the character development you might have liked them, but even so they were pretty bland. They didn’t really add much until the end - but that part was important. You find out how Desmond met Penny, and since that is where so much begins it’s something that needed to be told.
The majority of this episode wasn’t that great, with the exception of Kate in her panties, the repeated replays of Charlie being spiked, and of course the last bit of both the island and the flashbacks.
