There have been rumors that Battlestar Galactica’s next season, the 4th, would be it’s last. While these rumors have not been officially confirmed, according to SyFy Portal both Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama) and Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) said that the SciFi channel will end the show after the 4th Season. Straight from Olmos:

“This will probably be the most extraordinary season of ‘Battlestar … It’s the final season, so it’s definitely going to be the most vicious. As far as we know, in respects of the way we have this show constructed, this is the final season.“

That doesn’t seem like a solid confirmation, but Sackhoff also thought the same, and “almost confirmed” to IESB that it would be the last Season. I’m not sure what exactly she said, but considering two cast members believe it will end, coupled with the earlier rumors and dwindling ratings, I think this rumor definitely holds weight.

Personally I think this is a good thing. There were definitely some awesome episodes during Season 3, especially around the beginning and when nearing the finale. However, there was a lot of filler, and hopefully wrapping the show up in one Season will lead to only good episodes instead of padding in between the important story lines. The longer story arcs definitely lead to the best episodes, so when everything has to come together there won’t be time for pointless side stories.

Update:

(Unfortunately?) David Eick, executive producer of Battlestar, has smashed these rumors. “For those of you who have been paying attention over the years, this is not the first time Eddie has made an announcement about the possibility of the show’s end,” Eick said, “I promise you that when Ron and I make a decision about Galactica’s future, we’ll let you know.” That doesn’t actually change very much, since it was only a rumor in the first place, but it now seems just a bit less likely.
